Working Within the "System"

We, as a country, have wandered so far away from any concept of the limited power of government that I sometimes wonder what country I'm waking up in every morning.

Do I think we'll see our military having to engage in large-scale suppressive action against citizens, as some theorize, based on the concept of the citizenry being outraged by governmental overreach and engaging in open revolt?

No. To see why, you should take a look at my "Bread and Circuses" essay. Here's the link:

http://viewfromtheisland.blogtownhall.com/2008/02/13/bread_and_circuses.thtml

We're long past that point, unfortunately. Yes, people like US can envision some kind of citizen uprising, because we're strongly motivated and opinionated folks who are political junkies, tuned in to the current issues and aware of the ramifications and implications. We can see OURSELVES doing it.

Joe Sixpack's a whole other animal. He's tuned in to getting his kids to school on time, doing well at work, making the rent and car payments, rush hour traffic, what's on TV tonight, and what's for dinner.

If he pays attention to politics at all, it's only a month or two before the election... and it bores him to tears. He couldn't really care about issues in depth, it's all about sound bites. MAYBE he'll watch a debate or two; half the Joes and Janes won't even bother voting.

So while WE are getting outraged about the unconstitutional nature of the "bailouts" being proposed by everyone in sight other than Mike Spence -- Bush & Co, Obambi, McLiberal, the Congresscritters, the GOP, the Dems, and every other talking head on the Sunday Circuit -- all Joe and Jane care about is this:

"Congress and the administration are addressing the issue". So Joe and Jane heave a sigh of relief and grab another slice of pizza and a brewski, content that they'll be okay; all those financial problems are someone ELSE'S problem.

Is this a guy and gal who are going to become outraged enough to DEMAND accountability from their government, to the point of being willing to grab a gun and sacrifice the big screen, pizza delivery, bowling league, secure job, and pension plan because they're outraged by governmental overreach?

Are you kidding me?

That's exactly why we must dedicate ourselves to working within the system to effectuate substantive and meaningful changes. That means sticking to our principles, and utilizing every avenue to make our point known: communicating our ideas on the "local" level to our House representatives; responding to EVERY "money-gram" from the political parties as to WHY we're refusing to contribute our time or money, both the mail letters as WELL as the phone solicitaions (DO NOT hang up on them; give them an earful); being willing to stick to our guns and vote third-party if we're so inclined; discuss the candidates and issues CALMLY and INTELLIGENTLY with your social circle. A variety of other avenues exist.

This is an ongoing process. We didn't get in this mess overnight, and we won't get out of it this November.

But if we stick to our guns and work away at it, there is hope. Again, history speaks to us. There was a two-party system in this country consisting of the Democrats and the WHIGs. The WHIGs followed the same historical arc of the present-day GOP, offering themselves up as the Dem-Lite Party of their day. They ultimately met their demise as a political party, due to a stubborn and ever-enlarging core of principled advocates who refused to "go along" with that party's compromises on the issues of the day... at that time, slavery.

And guess what party replaced THEM? Yep. The GOP. Back when it actually stood for something.

We can do the same thing, as long as we don't expect instant results. It's a process.

Have faith, and keep heart.

Remind Me Again: What Party's This Guy Running In?

I've posted this as a comment on a couple of threads, but I think it deserves its own spot. The other night I saw a McCain/Palin ad on TV. Here is the salient quote:

"Twin Mavericks

"HE took on the GOP and reformed Washington

"SHE took on the GOP and reformed Alaska."

Um.... exactly what party do these people think they're running in?

All those who are holding your noses..... THAT'S what McCain thinks of YOU, your PARTY, and CONSERVATIVES IN GENERAL.

Because just exactly WHO has McCain been "taking on" in Washington the last 20 years? It sure as HELL wasn't the liberals, who all have their names on his bills as co-sponsors.

It's the CONSERVATIVES whose eyes he's poked out, while taking great pride in doing so.

You want to vote for that guy???????

Talk to the Hand!

Thanks to Pasadena Phil for the great idea for the title.

And, of course, it refers to the constant barrage and diatribes about how "a vote for Barr is a vote for Obama".

Hey! I'm sure that to OBAMA "a vote for Barr is a vote for MCCAIN!"

Let's face it, there's not ONE person ANYWHERE whose single vote is going to determine an election outcome.

But if every single one of us would just stick to our principles, no matter what, then we wouldn't find ourselves continually in this position of constantly having to search for the lesser of evils.

The very IDEA that the LESSER OF EVILS is in any way acceptable is simply despicable and abhorrent in a country in which tens of thousands have died in the Revolution and the Civil War to make sure we have a foundation from which we can seek our BEST.... and now we're resigned to compromising on our most mediocre.

Simply appalling.

For me, this ends here; the line has been drawn in the sand.

It's not like the GOP wasn't warned. Conservatives have been grumbling for over a YEAR, so if McCain loses, they have no one to blame but themselves.

The Cold Light of Day?

The shotgun wedding of McCain and Palin may be facing its first dose of harsh reality very soon, and I have to wonder if the wedding guests will be asking that their gifts be returned.

It seems that so far Palin’s been shielded by McCain’s campaign team from making any ad hoc comments, participating in any unscripted events, or being available to reporters to answer any questions. Read the entire story here or here.

You don’t have to think about this very hard to realize the problem the McCain campaign faces.

Palin’s the red meat McCain’s thrown to conservatives to get their support. It’s been surprisingly effective.

But what’s going to happen once they can’t control the flow of conversation anymore? When the reporters get to ask whatever they want?

I know what I’d ask.

“Governor Palin, you’re FOR drilling in ANWR; McCain’s against it. How do you reconcile that?”

“Governor Palin, what’s your position on amnesty? Do you support McCain’s position as being strongly for it?”

“Governor Palin, you’ve previously stated you think ‘climate change’ isn’t a man-made phenomenon. Is that still your position? Or do you now endorse your boss’s position?”

“Governor Palin, in light of your position that ‘climate change’ isn’t man-made, do you support your boss’s proposal for Cap and Trade legislation?”

And more along the same line. And I actually LIKE Palin (though not McCain); how do you think the reporters from the Left are going to treat her? There's no way she can avoid answering their questions; that would play even worse.

There is absolutely no upside in this for Palin (and her political future) or McCain that I can see. She either has to almost totally recant her previous positions – sacrificing her credibility and “conservativeness” – or state that even though she disagrees with McCain on MAJOR policy issues, she’s still willing to run with him, essentially calling into question the depth of her own commitment to her previous positions. Either way, her position as the “conservative leavening” of McCain will be shown as the sham it really is.

She’s in the same position Lieberman was in as Gore’s VP nominee, having to advocate policies with which he strongly disagreed, and he absolutely LOOKED like a cat on a griddle when he had to do so. It also irreparably harmed his reputation as a man of integrity, a reality now facing Palin.

The blush may very soon be coming off the rose.

McCain… Arrogant? Or Just Plain Stupid?

I just saw this article on the Townhall Home Page, entitled “McCain Pledges to Appoint Democrats to Cabinet”: here

Sheesh! Is this guy really THAT stupid? Or is this simply further evidence of the breadth of his arrogance?

He gets a helping hand with conservatives and "hold your nosers" by naming Palin, a woman with some arguable conservative chops, and promptly turns right around and promises to name Dems to his cabinet.

Some more of the legendary "reaching across the aisle".

What does this say about him? About the judges he’ll appoint, an issue so many yammer about in trying to justify their votes for McCain in spite of needing a military-grade gas mask to do so? About his ability to “listen” to conservatives?

Maybe he “listens”, but he sure as hell doesn’t “HEAR” anything!

While McCain and his Cabinet of Democrats and “moderate” Republicans (if we’re lucky!) are meeting in the White House, Palin will be in her office in the OEOB across the street, counting rubber bands.

As I have maintained right along, the naming of Palin is MEANINGLESS, because the old tiger hasn’t changed his stripes. He’s still a moderate Democrat running in the wrong party.

Update on Monday, 8 Sep:

Today, McCain vowed to "take on the GOP and Bush" (read the whole article  here ).

"McCain has not offered specific solutions to problems, saying instead he will reach out to Democrats to find answers. He said he would have more than one Democrat in his Cabinet."

That, of course, is the perennial problem with McCain. Always "reaching out" to Democrats for his solutions, NEVER conservatives.

His administration will make Bush look like the reincarnation of Reagan by comparison, and Bush was pretty darned bad.

Listen up, Palinistas!

This meeting of the Saint Crispin’s Day Society is hereby called to order here at The Orphanage!

Interesting analysis of McCain’s acceptance speech of last night Here

Some highlights to consider, particularly by those who’ve worked themselves into a tizzy over the naming of Palin as McCain’s VP nominee.

“McCain’s path to victory in November is found in setting himself apart from his own deeply unpopular party… It’s a task, like many others before them, that McCain intimates believe has been made considerably easier with his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate.”

Yep. As I’ve written, she’s simply his conservative “beard”. Also interesting: “setting himself apart from” the GOP, yet WE’RE castigated for doing the same thing by refusing to vote for the guy. A little double-standard there? Hmmmmmm?…..

“By picking an across-the-board conservative, McCain aides argue, they’ve allayed long-festering fears about the unpredictable Arizona senator among the conservative core of the party and empowered him to move away from the party brand without unduly angering GOP stalwarts.”

To, in other words, give conservatives the finger once again. What’s new? “Hey, here’s your stinkin’ conservative! Now leave me alone while I do my thing!” Unfortunately his idea of “mov(ing) away from the party brand” means hiking to the Left.

“’The base will now stay solid,’ said a top McCain aide. ‘The VP choice helps ensure that.’” In other words, they’ll ignore the man behind the curtain.

Hey, Palinistas. May I suggest Raspberry flavor for your Kool-Aid?

It was always my favorite.

The Orphanage

Yesterday, Virgina Patriot suggested I put up a new essay as the thread on the last one was getting kind of long -- 219 comments as of right now. Thanks, all!

He also mentioned that The Island has become kind of a touch-base for the disaffected conservatives; I'm flattered. To quote VaPat: "How about posting something/anything as often as needed just to provide a place for we happy few to hang out among friends? It doesn't have to be anything more than a 'Hey Guys, Here's another thread, the last one's too long.'"

Sounds like a plan to me! I'll keep an eye on comment count on the threads, and start a new one when required. No real topic, necessarily, just kind of an open forum.

And since we ARE disowned pretty much by our former "comrades", I got thinking about Reagan, and his statement that "I didn't leave the Democrat Party. The Democrat Party left me". Now I truly understand what he meant. At least in his time, there was a viable home for him to move to: the Goldwater wing of the GOP.

For us right now, there isn't that option. We've become orphans for now, hence the title of this essay. The Island has become The Orphanage.

And that's okay, because as Henry V said on St. Crispin's Day at the Battle of Agincourt (per The Bard), "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters), for he (or she) today who sheds his (or her) blood with me shall be my brother (or sister)". Of course, there weren't any battle participants of the fairer sex, so I kinda broadened the applicability.... but you get my drift. And the reference in VaPat's comment.

It has been very eye-opening to see the absolute hysteria with which dissent has been met. Pretty funny, too, frankly!

The National GOP Goes “California”!

Yes, I know, I swore to stop writing political stuff here, but I’m human and sometimes the urge to yell “I TOLD YOU SO!” just becomes overwhelming.

Particularly of late when I’ve been taking so much flak from the McCainiacs and GOP bobbleheads who keep preaching that the Universe will implode if Obambi wins the election.

Of course, as of this date, even some of the mainstream columnists have seriously discussed the possiblility of McAmnesty naming Joe Liberalman as a running mate. Personally, I don’t think even McRino’s THAT stupid (but you never know with such a megalomaniac!), and THAT’S not even the main issue I want to address.

What I predicted with a high level of confidence has, indeed, come to pass. The National GOP has totally revised its party platform to accommodate McIdiot’s natural leftism, and it’s a fulfillment of my prophesies going back to my earliest essays in 2006, right here at The Island.

You can read the entire AP story here.

Some salient quotes:

“Republicans are putting John McCain's campaign priorities above some of their pet issues, including drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and denying citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants… The panel turned back a move to deny citizenship to U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. Opponents raised constitutional concerns and said the proposal would complicate life for McCain, who has sponsored legislation giving illegal immigrants a path toward legal status but now prioritizes border security.”

"I want to give him a platform he can run on," said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. "I don't want to stick my finger in his eye."

WHY NOT? He’s been sticking HIS thumb in the eyes of conservatives for decades!

“Republicans are also doing a balancing act on climate change…the platform acknowledges a human role in increased carbon emissions”

Amnesty. Citizenship for “anchor babies”. “Climate change”. Cap and Trade. Those four issues alone – all McIdiot’s positions – are enough to totally BANKRUPT this nation, and all are issues upon which the National GOP has CAVED, following the path blazed by the California GOP lo, those many years ago.

You can read the entire article for yourself, but the bottom line is that the National GOP has shown itself willing to do the same thing the California State GOP did a couple of decades ago: throw conservatives and the conservative ideology and principles under the bus, because the only thing that matters is WINNING! As a “party”! It doesn’t matter if that party doesn’t stand for anything anymore! Just a “lighter” version of LIBERALISM!

The last national party that followed this strategy was the WHIG Party in the mid-19th Century, and BY GOD I hope the same thing happens to the GOP as happened to THEM!

I am outraged!

California Conservative Bloggers Blasting Away!

How's THAT for alliteration?

Two days ago, two noted California Conservative bloggers -- a truly endangered species -- met in person for the first time at a very fitting venue: the famed Angeles Shooting Range in Tujunga, California (an LA burb), the site where many of the guns featured in shooting sports magazines are tested by the articles' authors.

The day we were there, we were actually the biggest names at the place. Yes, I know, shocking but true. No, Clint Eastwood didn't make it, and Steven Segal was apparently otherwise engaged (he's a has-been anyway. Take it from another Hollyweird has-been). I think Bruce Willis was with his new squeeze. Bummer.

So there we were, two political celebrities -- Pasadena Phil and BrianR -- having to deal with the mobs of papparazzi all by ourselves. Well... we managed. We're tough!

We had a great time. Phil's very eloquent, as we all know, and natch we discussed politics during the cease-fires. Phil had a brand-new Ruger Mini-14 "assault rifle", with a freshly-mounted scope which we had to level before he took to the firing line.

I arrived first, and set up. Here's my "date" for the day, a very un-PC "sniper rifle":

Then Phil showed up, and set up his target downrange:

Which Candidate Should YOU Vote For?

Here at The Island, we're always looking for better ways to lend clarity to the issues and candidates, and thanks to our intrepid colleague the Crawfish, we now have a test YOU can take to help you make an informed decision on which lever to push or chad to punch come election time.

All you have to do is go to this link: Take the test

Here are my own results:

Baldwin, 89.8%

Barr, 65.31%
McRINO, 59.18% (I'm surprised it was even that high, but it seems I even shared some issues with Nader)

Obambi, 27.55%
McKinney, 20.41% (What the hell would SHE agree with ME on?)

Nader, 16.33%  (HUH????)

Well, given what y'all know about whom I'm planning to vote for, this should be no surprise. But I'd be REAL interested in learning about anybody else's results..... if you'd care to share in the comments!

Or... if you'd DARE to share!

Another day at the range

Well, I just got back from the range a couple of hours ago, and the great thing this time is that not only did my best friend and shooting buddy go with me, but his girlfriend came along, too!

Outstanding!

So, here we go.

This is Todd and Susan (guess which is which) discussing the upcoming target:

All in all, a great day! I love going to the range, and I love going with my Pard, but it's especially a treat when he brings his lady, too!

Not only did we get to bust some serious caps (we went through about 50 each) and bust some clays (for the most part on the first shot each), but we were in and out early before the heat really set in -- we were done by about 11AM and it was already busting 100 degrees -- and back at mi casa, sucking up iced teas and chilled water with the rest of the day still available.

Does Life really get much better than this?

I'll let you know tomorrow if I win tonight's Lotto....

I Can't Help Myself: "NO" to McCain!!!!

In spite of my earlier decision to stop writing political commentary here, this has come to my attention, and I must comment on it.

Today the RNC began running a 10-day, $3 million ad campaign for McCain. Here's the link: AP story

Here's the text of part of the ad:  “Record gas prices, a climate in crisis. John McCain says solve it now. With a balanced plan — alternative energy, conservation, suspending the gas tax AND more production here at home. He’s pushing his own party to face climate change."

The key phrase: "He’s pushing his own party to face climate change."

This clearly illustrates why McCain must not be elected President. He stands for a complete redefinition of the GOP to a party that by clear inference buys into Al Gore's hogwash about Globull Warming, among other liberal dogma, most notably amnesty. It was bad enough watching Newt Gingrich cave to political correctness while sitting next to Pelosi on that couch and preaching the mantra of Goreism.

But now we have the GOP itself bragging about this. After all, who paid for this ad? The Republican National Committee, not McCain.

Are you wondering how the GOP and RNC are spending any contributions you've sent or will send to them? Well, wonder no more.

The GOP is a party that has clearly lost its way. It no longer stands for anything other than putting any candidate in any office using any means, regardless of any actual principle or ideology that may be involved. This has become nothing more than a game of power-mongering based solely on cynical pandering and hysterical hyperbole. The worst sort of populism.

I'm fortunate in that my own Congressman, Buck McKeon, is a solid conservative. Therefore, I'll continue to support him -- as an individual candidate -- in every way I can.

But the GOP brand is "in the trash can", as Rep. Tom Davis noted ( Here ). "McCain has his own branding and it is not consistent with congressional Republican branding." Too bad his own party hasn't paid Davis any attention.

As this campaign season proceeds it becomes ever more clear to me that it's really essential for the future of this country and traditional conservatism that McCain MUST lose. The GOP didn't learn Thing One from the drubbing they took in 2006; in fact, they've pandered even further Left than before. They didn't learn anything from their two attempts to force amnesty down our throats; now they're backing Mr. Amnesty himself. They haven't learned anything from their crashing membership rolls, nor sub-par contributions.

The only hope I can see for the GOP is that a resounding defeat of McCain and his policies will awaken them to some hard realities: a party that stands for nothing can expect no support. If people want to vote for Democrat policies, they can vote for The Real Thing. Why should they support a pale imitation?

If the GOP doesn't get it after that, then they deserve to go the way of the WHIG Party.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled puff pieces.

A Day At The Range.....

Many times here at The Island, we've discussed guns, shooting, and the joy of teaching our kids the enjoyment of our sport, as well as an appreciation of the Second Amendment. This was a day my little girl and I spent doing exactly that, back in 1994.

Preparing to shoot (Ruger Mark I .22):
